Young martial arts experts make the grade

FIVE junior members of Barnard Castle-based Chung Do Kwan Taekwondo were all smiles after achieving their black belts.

Josh Graham, 14, Max Atkinson, 14, Max Cruddas, 15, Francesca Cruddas, 13 and Ruby Cruddas, 10, all passed with flying colours in front of examiner Master Ron Brennan, 9th Dan.

All the juniors train two to four times a week with instructor, Katey Wallace, 5th Dan.

She said the youngsters had excelled themselves.

“Some of these young people have been training for nearly six years to get to this level.

“Most people would have quit by now but to get to black belt takes patience, dedication, commitment, hard work and lots of effort and every single one of them have given that.”

She added: “I am so pleased for them to achieve this goal but hopefully this is only the start of their journey in martial arts and it’s something they can do for the rest of their lives

“To see them come through the door as kids and change into mature, sensible caring young people is why I love my job.”

Sara Graham, 17, also achieved her 3rd Dan black belt, after ten years of hard training.

The club is offering free taster sessions in Teesdale to families or individuals who want to give martial arts a try. Go to www.chungdok wantkd.co.uk for more details.
