“I would say nearly every child took part in an event or tournament of some kind.”
Exercise has also found its way into the mainstream curriculum helping to kick brains into gear during maths lessons.
A squad of year six sports leaders have also kept staff and fellow pupils on their toes.
Kate Stephenson, from County Durham Sport, revealed the school’s inclusive access to competitions and its leader scheme made it stand out.
She said: “Sports leaders take responsibility for leading children in physical activity so they are increasing those levels through the day.
“It’s important for developing that well-rounded child.
“It’s not just about getting hot and sweaty but using those cognitive skills as well,” she added.
