West Auckland Parish Council is trying to find out who is responsible for the upkeep of plots of land which run adjacent to the “narrow path” between Edith Terrace and George Street off Copeland Road.
The gardens have not been attended to for some time. A shopping trolley has been added to the mass of overgrown weeds resulting in an eyesore for residents using the pathway.
Prior to last month’s parish council meeting, councillors Lynn Rielly and Billy Robinson met to discuss the issue.
Cllr Robinson said: “An idea was that we find out who they belong to and if they don’t want them we try to take them over.
“My argument is that we could never get a skip up there because there is no access,” he said.
“If we did it all up and then the people who own it wanted it back we would have no leg to stand on.
“It is a real mess and I don’t know how to go forward with this myself. What do you all think about taking it over?”
Councillors discussed the possibility of clearing the land and turning it into an allotment space. However, security proved to be a concern.
It was agreed that a Land Registry search would be carried out initially to try and find out who is responsible.
Chairman Cllr Colin Mairs said: “We think those pieces of land were gardens that belonged to people in terraces on Copeland Road.
“There are quite a few plots there,” he added.
“We think they could have possibly belonged to houses in the sixties and seventies numbers.
“Maybe people have not been told about them by their landlords,” he said.
