WELL WISHERS have rallied round for a Teesdale pensioner by raising £1,600 for a health trust.
Staindrop’s Joy Robson has been part of the Manson Grant and The Dynamos Fan Club for more than a decade, organising annual coach trips to see the band in Scotland. But the 80-year-old had to put her role on hold this year while she has treatment for bowel cancer.
This led the club to donate the proceeds of their raffle to the Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust as a gesture of its gratitude.
“I thought it was marvellous,” said Mrs Robson.
“People from around here have been involved in making that money. I saw them off but I could not be with them this year.”
Mrs Robson handed over the money at Darlington Memorial Hospital last week to go towards colorectal treatment at the trust.
“The doctor said ‘you have a few years left in you yet’ – I cope,” added Mrs Robson.
The grandmother-of-three has lived in Staindrop all her life. She married her husband, Les, at St Mary’s Church in the village 59 years ago before the couple took on a shop at the east end of Front Street.
The pair went on to deliver milk throughout the dale – never missing a delivery for almost two decades.
After retiring, they spent a number of years helping the Volunteer Driver Scheme around the dale before it eventually disbanded.
Manson Grant and The Dynamos have played twice in Staindrop thanks to the work of Mrs Robson. And some fan club members went to great lengths to support this year’s fundraiser.
Mrs Robson added: “There is an undertaker called George who goes to the functions every year – he shaved off his beard, went around with a bucket and raised £400 before pushing the total up to £500 himself. He’s a wonderful man and included in the cheque.” Mrs Robson thanked Robert Cameron and Manson Grant from the band for their support and hopes to travel with the club next year on its trip to Spain.
