Hadi brings traditional barber skills to Barnard Castle

HOT towel shaves and flaming ear hair removal have arrived with a new barbers in Barnard Castle.

The Traditional Kurdish Barbers opened in Newgate a fortnight ago following a swift renovation of the former Bengal Spice takeaway.

Owner and barber Hadi Toifiq moved base from Darlington to Teesdale to get closer to some of his regular customers.

The 29-year-old said: “I had a couple of customers who used to come through to Darlington.

“They told me it would be better in Barnard Castle for them as there isn’t a shop like this.

“Now I want to see if people come.”

Among the services on offer at the shop are nose hair waxes and ear hair removal alongside shaves, hair washes and orthodox haircuts.

“We do a usual haircut or whatever people ask for,” added Mr Toifiq.

“We’ll have old people, young people – we’ll just try our best to make them happy.”

Mr Toifiq moved to the UK from Kirkuk, in Iraq, in 2007 and lives in Darlington.

He revealed he’d already received a warm welcome from towns folk.

He added: “It’s always been my dream to do something like this.

“I really like to be close to nice people and that’s definitely one thing which has pushed me to come here.

“We will do our best to make our customers happy.”

The Traditional Kurdish Barbers is at 2 Newgate and open Monday to Saturday 8am to 6pm.
