BUOYED by success elsewhere in the region, a dance tutor is launching ballet classes for adults in Barnard Castle.
And while her pirouettes and plies have proved popular with the ladies, Joyce Jeffrey admits to a dearth of budding Billy Elliots.
“It’s been all ladies. I did have an enquiry from a man at Ferryhill, but he didn’t turn up,” she said. “I think men have an attitude about ballet, but they are welcome – go along with an open mind and they might find the enjoy it and feel the benefit of it.”
Men and women, experienced and novice alike, will be made welcome to the weekly classes at The Witham which take place at 10am on Tuesdays, starting November 14.
“The other classes I run have taken off extremely well with ages 18 to 76.”
Ms Jeffrey, who is based in Coxhoe, has “danced all my life” and for years ran a successful theatre dance school in Gateshead. Qualified to fellowship level – the highest – she has called her Barnard Castle class Tutu and Tone.
“It’s fitness based on ballet technique. It involves a warm up, bar work – which is the strengthening part – then the steps and a cool down at the end.
“There are a lot of ladies who come along and who say they did ballet when they were children. Others may have always wanted to dance but may never have had the opportunity – now they can.
“I can also adapt the class for the different levels of skill.”
She added: “I am very excited to begin teaching at The Witham, which is a beautiful venue, and hope to share my passion and encourage others to benefit from the classes which will, over the weeks, improve posture, fitness, flexibility, strength and balance while at the same time learning ballet technique and having fun dancing to beautiful inspirational music from Broadway and West End musicals played in a ballet style.”
