Woodland animal sanctuary inundated with unwanted pets

AN animal sanctuary is full to capacity after being inundated with people wanting to get rid of their pets over Christmas.
Ark On The Edge animal sanctuary, in Woodland, was even fielding calls on Christmas Eve about unwanted cats, dogs, rabbits, goats and horses.
Sanctuary manager Pat Kingsnorth says that while some people have legitimate reasons for needing to find new homes for their pets, most simply want rid of their animals before they go on holiday.
Some, she added, turn nasty when they find out the sanctuary is full and they will have to go on a waiting list to bring their unwanted pets in.
Ark On The Edge has more than 30 cats on its current waiting list.
Ms Kingsnorth said: “On Tuesday (December 20) we had 23 calls from people who did not want various animals. It is just so sad.
“We had calls over Christmas from people who did not want to go on the waiting list, they just want rid of them. We have had some really nasty messages.
“I can understand people being frustrated because they ring round animal sanctuaries and they are all full.”
Ark On The Edge currently has 14 cats and about nine rabbits that need to find homes before more abandoned animals can be taken in.
The sanctuary has four goats and has been asked to take on three more but there is no space for them.
It has also been asked to take on more horses.
Ms Kingsnorth said: “We are still trying to find homes for two that got dumped a year ago.
“They are ready to be broke. They have already been ridden bare back.”
The animal lover said she would normally break the horses herself, but is unable to following recent surgery. The two male horses are about four years old.
Fortunately Ms Kingsnorth, who is recovering from a shoulder replacement, enjoyed help from volunteers on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, but would welcome more people to help.
It also runs solely on donations and it costs about £2,500 a month run.
Anyone who can help, would like to adopt an animal or would like to make a contribution can contact Ms Kingsnorth on 07970 802286.
