AN Italian virtuoso and an orchestra featuring musicians from across the North East will delight fans of classical guitar this weekend.
The Barnard Castle Classical Guitar Weekend features two concerts and a masterclass with Giulio Tampalini at St Mary’s Parish Church on Saturday, June 24, and Sunday, June 25.
It kicks off on Saturday with a seminar, discussion and masterclass led by the guitarist from 1pm to 5pm.
Players of all levels and experience are welcome and as well as the opportunity to play, there will be discussion on a broad range of topics. Tickets are £10 for players, £5 for visitors.
Then in the evening, Mr Tampalini will be joined by the Newcastle Guitar Orchestra for a concert featuring music by Vivaldi, Grieg and Rodrigo. Tickets are £12 (£10 concessions) and the show starts at 7.45pm.
On Sunday, the weekend concludes with Encores Again, featuring Mr Tampalini and guests. Starting at 7pm, tickets are £10 (£8 concessions).
The weekend has been organised by professional singer/guitarist Paul Croft, from Barnard Castle, who has brought guitarists together in the town for the past seven years.
He said: “I have promoted guitar concerts and masterclasses by some of the world’s leading players for almost 40 years now and in that time I can honestly say I have never heard a guitarist or teacher as remarkable as Giulio Tampalini.”
The Newcastle Guitar Orchestra was formed in 2012 and features members ranging in age from 14 to post retirement drawn from all parts of the region.
“Instruments are all classical acoustic guitars, including bass and requinto,” said Mr Croft.
Sunday’s show follows on from last year’s Encores programme which proved popular with the audience.
“It is basically an evening inspired by many of the pieces that drew both players and audiences to the world of solo classical guitar in the first place,” he said.
