THE Bowes Museum celebrated its 125th anniversary on Saturday and raised a glass to its next 125 years.
The treasure house’s big day saw a special smartphone app being launched to give museum-goers instant information about its collection.
There were also tours, talks, children’s activities, food and drinks. Some of the events had been planned for the grounds but were moved inside due to the rain. Music from Carillon, Los Capitanes and The Lake Poets was performed in the gallery space due to the switch.
People were asked to sign a 125th anniversary guest book, as well as share and record their museum stories on video for posterity.
Those who dropped by were greeted by John and Josephine Bowes – two actors dressed as the museum’s founders.
Rosie Bradford, events co-ordinator, said: “All the curators are here today along with the director. I’ve worked out that for the £2.50 entrance fee, people have had the chance to take part in £500 worth of talks. That’s amazing. Today is all about celebrating the museum for the wonderful and eclectic place it is. It’s a shame about the weather but we’re not letting it beat us.”
Facepainting and the Punch and Judy show were enjoyed by the children. Meanwhile, adults enjoyed a pop-up bar in the picture gallery.
Alice Oakley takes her son, Ben, to the museum regularly. They were taking part in a teddy bear hunt. She said: “There’s so much to do – we love it here.”
