CHILDREN have been learning about the mysteries of the rocks of the upper dale in a unique craft event.
A large group of young people converged on Bowlees Visitor Centre for the regular Wild Wednesday programme which last week took the topic Geology Rocks. Nic Cullen of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) partnership said activities were aimed at teaching children more about the types of rock that can be found in the upper dale.
Along with enjoying a guided walk with Dr Stuart Jones, of the department of earth sciences at Durham University, children enjoyed making fossils and painting them and identifying the different types of rock.
They also made crinoids, a creature that lived on earth 320 million years ago.
Ms Cullen said Teesdale had a tropical climate at the time as it was much closer to the equator then.
