PEOPLE who enjoy a bit of French flair are in for a treat when Staindrop’s Scarth Memorial Hall celebrates Bastille Day on July 14.
Along with a summer spread of bread, cheese, pate and olives, and a range of French wines, festival goers will enjoy “hot club” music performed by Emma Fisk's Hot Club du Nord.
The well-established gypsy jazz quartet play the music of Stephane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt from the 1940s.
Scarth Hall’s Teresa Driscoll said: “They do it brilliantly, all top-drawer musicians.
“If you like the music of the film Chocolat, you’ll love this.”
She added: “The band have recently sold out the Queen’s Hall Arts Centre, in Hexham, and play at venues and festivals across the North East and elsewhere.”
Featuring Emma Fisk on violin, James Birkett and David Harris on guitars and Bruce Rollo on double bass, the band boasts a wealth of experience, knowledge and love of the Hot Club and gypsy jazz style.
Those attending will hear fresh interpretations of the material, as well as recreations of arrangements from the original recordings.
It is described as a treat for connoisseurs of swinging string jazz and lovers of all things vintage.
Ms Fisk has been playing hot club and gypsy jazz since she was a teenager when she soaked up classic Grappelli recordings and was lucky enough to meet him after a performance at Sunderland Empire.
For the past 15 years she has toured the UK and recorded with critically acclaimed gypsy jazz quartet Djangologie.
Ms Fisk has appeared as guest violinist at jazz festivals throughout the UK, including performances with the Remi Harris Trio, Keith Nichols, Tony Oreshko Trio and The Jazz Repertory Company.
Hot Club du Nord is her chance to revisit the classic Hot Club repertoire. Tickets to event cost £8.
