Fun and games as Cotherstone prepares for carvial weekend

A TRADITIONAL scarecrow trail marks the advent of Cotherstone’s annual village carnival weekend.
The fun and games stretch from Friday, June 16, to Sunday, June 18. About two dozen scarecrows are expected to be dotted around the village from June 11, each following the theme of well known proverbs and sayings.
A highlight of the weekend is the fancy dress parade which starts from the Fox and Hounds pub at 1pm on the Saturday, and goes the village’s east green, where prizes are awarded for the best costumes.
The weekend begins on Friday at 6pm with a children’s fun run and an adults quoits knockout, both behind the Fox and Hounds.
Following the fancy dress parade, which will be led by the carnival queen and the Rythm Train band, activities move to the village hall at 2pm where there will be various stalls including cake, tombola, books, bric a brac, raffle, cream teas, balloon modelling and craft stalls.
Carnival committee member Jenny Watson said: “Events are organised by different organisations within the community, not just the Fun Weekend committee, thus making it a happy, fun weekend for everyone.”
From 3pm there will be rounders and a BBQ in the play park.
At 5 pm there is the duck race on the beck on the east green followed by a family evening with circus skills and a make-your-own-pizza event at 6pm in the village hall. Sunday kicks off with football matches at 10.30am, a dog show at 11pm and children’s sports.
