£14,000 cash boost for The Hub hits the right note

A £14,000 boost at The Hub, in Barnard Castle, has hit the right note with the community centre’s music studio.
The cash, donated by Barney’s four county councillors, will fund extra music tuition for all ages at The Hub.
Traditionally, the studio has delivered guitar, keyboard and drums to children aged eight and older in an informal youth club type setting.
From January, the type of lessons on offer will also include grades in keyboard, guitar and drums.
The mix of some informal sessions and more formal graded lessons will complement each other and cater for parents who have been enquiring about grades for some years.
The cash is being used to employ four new music teachers at the Hub.
Manager Rachel Tweddle said: “We wanted to take on board the feedback from parents, children, young people and other adults in the community and bring all this together to make sure we are using the funds wisely in order to deliver the best quality music service in Teesdale.”
In addition to formal tuition, there will be singing lessons, an adult community choir, a youth community choir, the reintroduction of the Teesdale Soul Band, ukulele lessons and brass lessons.
The new staff will also contribute to the extended opening hours in the studio, meaning that anyone can come along and practice from 9am to 9pm Monday to Thursday, 9am to 8pm Fridays, and 9.30am to 2pm Saturdays.
Ms Tweddle added: “This is an exciting time for The Hub Music Studio and we are so excited to welcome our new teachers.
“We have also appointed three young trainees who have been volunteering at The Hub for a while now. We will be training them up in teaching, music tech and event management.
“Having been approached by a number of music companies and larger charities, we felt employing staff was the way forward, investing in the local community and our young people.”
To book a lesson, recording space or a place in one of the group sessions please contact Ms Tweddle on 01833 690150 or Pete Bousfield, studio manager on 07788 610250. Term starts on Tuesday, January 3.
