FAMILIES in Teesdale are being asked to consider buying an extra present this Christmas to help ensure more young people wake up to a visit from Santa.
Pupils at Staindrop Academy are supporting Cash For Kids Mission Christmas, the UK’s largest annual Christmas toy appeal.
The charity aims to support disadvantaged children aged from birth to 18 who may be living in poverty during the festive period.
Pupils at the school have been tasked with collecting gifts for those in need.
Head of year ten and 11 Karen Fowler said: “We collected Christmas presents last year but we thought we would go bigger this year and we decided to get involved with Cash For Kids. We have asked all students and delivered assemblies about buying an extra gift.
“The charity work done here is fantastic and parent support is fantastic too.
“We had a brilliant success with Children In Need.
“The students really came together. We had a target of £600 and raised £935.”
Gifts must be unwrapped and suitable for someone aged 18 or under.
Suggested donations include selection boxes, books and toys. Anyone who would like to help can send a gift donation to school with a pupil.
The gifts will be delivered by a member of staff to a regional drop-off point on December 22.
