A BARNARD Castle businesswoman is appealing to warm-hearted Teesdale residents to help the homeless this Christmas.
Donna Dobson has launched an appeal for people to donate warm coats for the homeless and people in need. They can drop them off at her shop, Fox and Field Countrywear, in Market Place.
The coats will be donated to Kings Church, in Darlington, to be distributed among those who face another winter and Christmas in the cold.
Ms Dobson said: “I think everybody gets a bit fed up with being asked for money and at this time of year I think you will agree that money is tight for everybody, so we thought a coat appeal would be more a more productive way of giving something to the less fortunate.
“I think we all have a coat lurking at the back of the cupboard that we no longer wear but is still perfectly good. Well this way it gets to benefit somebody else.”
The Kings Church, which organises a foodbank, will distribute the coats at their collection points. There are several homeless people in Teesdale and Ms Dobson hoped they will also benefit.
Within a day of launching the appeal on social media, Fox and Field Countrywear received a number of coats.
But Ms Dobson said warm hats, gloves and scarves are also welcome.
“When I see a homeless person, my instinct is to give them money but this isn’t the best thing to do in some cases – giving warm coats will be much better,” Ms Dobson said.
She hoped to make the warm coat drive a regular event but said her priorities are to make this year’s appeal a success. Fox and Field will be collecting warm items until December 14.
