The Witham's new year treat for Teesdale's arts lovers

CHRISTMAS may be just round the corner, but arts officials at The Witham, Barnard Castle, are already looking to the new year with the launch of their spring 2018 programme.

Covering the first five months of the new year, a varied programme has been drawn up, including a new “pay what you decide” scheme.

Folk features strongly with Emily Smith and Jamie McClennan, the Nordic Fiddles Bloc and the return of the award-winning singer and bouzouki player, Daoiri Farrell.

For classical fans, one of the most promising young artists at the International Mozarteum, pianist Chiyan Wong, will perform Bach’s Goldberg variations, Beethoven’s Six Bagatelles, Busoni’s Sonatina Seconda and Liszt’s Don Juan.

An ensemble of players from the Northern Sinfonia bring Brahm’s String Quintet No. 1 in F, while the Reg Vardy Brass Band will also perform.

The live theatre season kicks off with the Castle Player’s Oliver Twist and the Northern Stage’s production of H.G. Well’s iconic novel, War of the Worlds.

For the first time, The Witham has joined the Arts Council funded REACH project, which is designed to increase the quantity and the quality of contemporary theatre in the North East.

As part of this, The Witham is trialling pay what you decide for Testosterone, a high-energy production exploring masculinity presented by Rhum and Clay theatre company.

British mountaineering legend Alan Hinkes will present a film screening of the critically-acclaimed biopic of his life. He will introduce the film and speak both during and after about his amazing experiences.

Professional tap dance comes courtesy of Fall Out, presented by Old Kent Road.

Comedy continues with the return of Lucy Porter plus Phill Jupitus and Richard Herring among a strong programme.

A family programme of four live theatre shows, a programme of exhibitions and workshops, films and live screenings are also included.

The spring brochure is now available. Alternatively, go to www.thewitham.org.uk
