AN enduring women’s group leader is stepping down after three decades at the helm.
Barnard Castle’s Doreen Moore has been part of the Mothers’ Union for 53 years and has led the town branch since the 1980s.
But the 82-year-old has called time on her spell as group leader.
The charity branch paid tribute to Mrs Moore’s efforts with flowers and a special cake at St Mary’s Church last week.
Union member Sandra Sumner said Mrs Moore and her husband, Revd John Moore, had been a “phenomenal couple”.
She added: “Doreen is stepping down as group leader . She had served absolutely fabulously.
“We could not possibly thank her enough.”
At its height in the early 1990s, the Mothers’ Union Christian charity had more than 200,000 members in the UK.
But an ageing membership has meant numbers have fallen back to about 90,000 today.
Mrs Moore said she thought the time was right for her to stop now. She added: “I think some fresh blood and fresh ideas from younger members are what we need.”
