A KIND-HEARTED scheme to keep the homeless warm is catching on in Barnard Castle.
The co-owner of No. 15 Coffee House and Deli, Emma Rowell, has teamed up with the foodbank at Barnard Castle Influence Church to offer free “suspended coffees” to those who need them.
Customers can buy a “suspended coffee” in reserve at the Horsemarket cafe, which will be offered free of charge to those who need one.
Ms Rowell said the scheme had taken off and hoped to get more town shops on board. She added: “Some people in Barnard Castle are extremely generous so we have expanded it out.
“We’ve got a couple of homeless people in town we’re supporting with hot food and drinks. We get about four or five suspended coffees a day which is too much for us.
“Coffees shouldn’t be an unaffordable luxury.”
The cafe has agreed to work with the Influence Church, on Galgate, to direct those in need of a hot drink down into town.
Suz Gregory co-ordinates a StoreHouse foodbank scheme and is part of the Influence Church.
She said: “We’re quite excited about this and it’s something we might take for granted.
“It’s nice to come inside during colder weather.”
Ms Gregory revealed she also had plans to try to set up a CAP job club (Christians Against Poverty) in Barnard Castle.
She explained: “We run a job club in Richmond and we do have people coming from Barnard Castle to use it.
“We’ve had volunteers working for quite a while and we’ve already got a facility in Barnard Castle – it’s just a case of looking and seeing how we can get more people to run it.”
Ms Rowell added: “It’s desperately needed here because they may have to pay to get the bus into Richmond.”
