A BUNCH of youngsters in Barnard Castle tested their cooking skills in a banana bake-off to help them learn more about Fairtrade.
Pupils at St Mary’s RC Primary School were given the opportunity to showcase their cooking talents by using bananas as a main ingredient.
Headteacher Jane Weatherall said: “The children have been learning about Fairtrade for Fairtrade Fortnight. Each year we try to highlight the importance of Fairtrade in a different way. Knowing how much they all like to cook, this year we decided to do a bake-off and they all had to cook something with bananas.”
Having baked during the half-term break, about 30 children brought their culinary creations into school last week. This included a selection of banana cakes, biscuits, muffins and pancakes.
Teachers were tasked with the judging. The two overall winners each received a cooking apron for their jar of banana jam and a banana and walnut loaf. Ms Weatherall said: “The bake-off helps to make it more fun for the children to learn. They all got to taste each other’s food and have now taken it all home for their families to enjoy.”
