Hut people drum up a passion for folk music

A FOLK music workshop led by a unique duo proved to be a hit with youngsters in Barnard Castle.
Year six pupils from Green Lane Primary School were taken on a musical journey across the world with The Hut People at The Witham.
Accordionist Sam Pirt and percussionist Gary Hammond led the two-hour session before they were due to perform at the art centre earlier this month.
Deputy headteacher Nic Linsley said: “The Witham invited us down to do a workshop.
“It was a great opportunity for the children. It will be nice to take what they have learned back to the classroom.”
The pair, who have been playing together for seven years, brought with them about 50 of their instruments.
They also let the children have a go at recreating some global rhythms.
Mr Hammond said: “We often do these workshops. We travel all over the world.
“I think it is nice for the kids to play with musicians and try different sorts of music.”
The children were invited back for the evening gig and four of them joined the duo on stage to perform in front of a live audience.
