WI secretary Celia Dixon |
OUR first meeting of 2017 was quite aptly a Burns Night Supper celebrating the life of Robert Burns who has provided us with a poem that will forevermore remain the best way to see in the New Year.
We had an evening embraced and celebrated with tartan, tunes and haggis by all.
After welcoming 24 ladies, both members and guests, and reading the notices, we began by taking part in two quizzes.
One tested our knowledge of Scottish twang and the other saw how much we really knew about the man our evening was dedicated to – it would seem I should have done my homework.
A Scottish grace was read by our president Janine Barron and then the haggis was paraded around the room for all to marvel at before being addressed by secretary Celia Dixon.
Finally it was time to enjoy the feast prepared practically in its entirety (haggis, Lorne sausage, neeps and tatties, vegetarian Scotch eggs and cabbage with mint) by committee member Naila Laundy – who, may I add, deserves many gold stars.
Our meal was delicious and almost all of it was devoured by the end.
Throughout supper, poems were read by various members, some even bravely attempting a Scottish accent, before the raffle was drawn.
By this point, everyone was suitably stuffed and just about able to fit in the tea, coffee and biscuits laid on by hostesses Naila Laundy, Celia Dixon and Maureen Gwilliam.
Our next meeting will be held on Monday, March 27, at the Guide Hut, on Birch Road, at 7pm.
There will be An Introduction to Chinese Medicine by Jill Marks. If you are interested in joining the WI, please contact secretary Celia Dixon on 01388 710952.
