A £2million household waste depot in Teesdale is expected to be open by summer next year.
Plans for the site, at Stainton Grove Industrial Estate, would see the redevelopment of the former highways depot and pallet yard.
It will include a shop when useable goods sent for the tip are put up for sale, as well as a split-level household waste recovery centre, a sorting facility, staff facilities and vehicle storage, parking and manoeuvring areas.
Durham County Council’s chief executive, Terry Collins, gave a brief update on the plans at Teesdale Action Partnership’s last board meeting.
He said: “Like most things that are complex, we need to work with bodies like the Environment Agency.
“They have requested that do certain things.
“Hopefully, by May we can be well on the way with it. I do think that once you actually get it, it will help a lot.”
Visitors to the site will be able to recycle all materials currently available at the 11 other sites in the county as well as dedicated trade waste recycling – a first for a household tip in the county.
Durham County Council’s head of projects and business services, Alan Patrickson, said: “We hope to have the new facility open by summer 2018.”
It will operate everyday with the exception of Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
The site will be open to the public from 9am until 6pm from April to September and 9am until 3.30pm from October to March.
The present site at Stainton Grove is only open Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays.
The hours were reduced in 2013 despite an outcry from residents.
