PUPILS from Barnard Castle School, Montalbo and Green Lane, and Teesdale School took part in a music competition that was hailed for its high standard by the judges.
The Barnard Castle Rotary Young Musician of the Year competition was hosted by Barnard Castle School and held in the sixth form centre.
The adjudicator was Margaret Smith, choral conductor, pianist, accompanist and violinist and former director of music at Leeds Girls’ School.
Simon Dearsley, director of music at Barnard Castle School, accompanied a number of the performers.
Ian Hodgson, from the Rotary Club, said the event gave young people in Teesdale the chance to perform in front of an audience – some for the first time. He said it was a big success and revealed it was all made possible thanks to a big donation. Mr Hodgson explained: “We have been able to finance this event and give prizes due to a significant donation from a previous organisation, Teesdale Brass Band Contest, which gave funding to our Rotary Club to be used for the continuation of music for young people.”
It is planned that this will be an annual event and the next competition is due to be staged on Sunday, November 5. The prizewinners were:
Junior vocal: 1, Evie Milbank; 2, Jessica Bassett; 3, Martha Rokk.
Intermediate vocal: 1, Archie Coward; 2, Evelyn Brenkley; 3, Kirsty McLachlan
Senior vocal: 1 and overall vocal prize Sam Farquhar; 2, Ben Edwards; 3, Molly Nixon.
Junior instrumental: 1, Joshua Greenwell (harp), 2, Heather Brown (cornet); 3, Joshua Greenwell (piano).

Sam and Evelyn both go through to the quarter finals of the Rotary Young Musician of the Year, in Alnwick, on March 11.
“Congratulations and good luck to them,” said Mr Hodgson.
