A SURVEY into the condition of Barnard Castle’s battered Market Cross was carried
out at the weekend as part of a feasibility study into its possible restoration.
Surveyor Peter Lewis took a look over the landmark on Sunday on behalf of Durham County Council. The Market Cross has been damaged on several occasions during recent months due to HGVs being diverted through the town during the A1 upgrade.
Chris Myers, Durham County Council’s regeneration projects manager, said: “A grant has recently been provided by our Teesdale Action Partnership which is allowing us to carry out a feasibility study on the potential restoration and conservation of the Market Cross.
“The study will allow us to update our records on the condition of this important listed building. Once this work is complete, we will consider the results and share them with the area action partnership.”
