BARNARD Castle’s 1940s weekend is to become a permanent fixture in the town’s calendar of events.
Members of the town council, which organises the activities, agreed last week that it should become an annual fixture coinciding with Armed Forces Day in June.
Meanwhile, councillors were told activities for this year’s 1940s weekend – the second – were starting to take shape.
Events will be held at various venues in the town from June 23-25.
Vintage vehicles from the era will be invited onto the cobbles in Market Place, while the Victory in Europe Re-enactment Association (Vera) has confirmed it would be attending.
There are plans for vintage stalls in the Methodist Church Hall, a classic coach tour and a photo display for shop windows.
There will also be 1940s hair styling in the parlour of the Methodist church.
Entertainment will be led by George Formby impersonator Colin Bourdiec, who has been booked for the weekend.
Also hitting the right notes will be Damaris Jean and Steve Green, who will perform songs from the 1940s through to the 60s.
Returning again this year are the Vintage Belles, who proved popular at the inaugural weekend.
This year, they will perform at The Hub on Friday, June 23. Tickets for the show will be £10, available from the town council office at Woodleigh.
Other events could include a 1940s tea dance at The Morritt Hotel, Greta Bridge.
An event guide is to be produced and promotional flyers will be distributed.
The next meeting of the 1940s working group will take place on Tuesday, February 28.
Councillors noted the information.
