Take a leap of faith at Gainford church to connect with Christianity

A DALE church is hoping to encourage more people to connect with Christianity by taking a leap of faith.
St Mary’s Church, Gainford, will challenge visitors to conquer their fear of heights and take part in an abseil from the church tower on Saturday, March 4.
The family event is being held as part of the Talking Jesus long weekend which is being led by the Archbishop of York John Sentamu.
From Thursday, March 2, to Sunday, March 5, 20 bishops from across the Northern Province of the Church of England will visit the diocese of Durham. Along with their mission teams, they will visit churches and encourage people to talk about Jesus.
The Bishop of Blackburn Rt Revd Julian Henderson and his team will be visiting St Mary’s, Gainford, during the weekend and they will be there to support all of the abseilers between 10am and 4pm.
Church warden Geoff Taylor said: “The weekend is all about getting people to talk about Jesus and to visit their own churches.
“It will be a family day and anyone over the age of nine can have a go abseiling from the tower, which I think is about 90 feet high. Everyone who has a go will receive a certificate and a photograph. It is as much a social occasion as anything.”
An accomplished mountaineer will also be inside the church giving a presentation about his adventures and experiences. Refreshments will be served, including soup and hot dogs. The event is free but donations are welcome.
On Friday, March 3, the church will be welcoming pupils from Gainford Primary School who are celebrating 165 years of the school being in its present building.
Revd Eileen Harrop and church warden Sue Taylor have been running workshops for the children relating to Jesus. During the workshops, they have been looking at what it would be like if they were there when Jesus was performing miracles such as healing the lame man.
Mr Taylor said: “They are going to be bringing in the work they have been doing and will be showing it and talking about it in church.
“The Bishop of Blackburn will be present. Refreshments will be served. Everyone is welcome to come along at 9.15am.”
To conclude the weekend, a family service will be held at the church on Sunday, March 5 at 10.45am. The service will feature St Mary’s band.
Mr Taylor said: “The whole idea of the weekend is to encourage people to come and visit the church. It will help to build interest for the future generations.”
