Teesdale venues unite for summer guide

FAMILIES will have no difficulty finding things to do in Barnard Castle this summer thanks to a united effort to produce a summer guide to events in the town.

Arts centre The Witham teamed up with The Bowes Museum and youth centre The Hub to produce the programme, which features in excess of 40 happenings across the town.

Sarah Gent, of The Witham, explained that not only does the guide feature things for families to do, but events were co-ordinated so that things taking place at different venues do not clash.

The new guide is also targeted at people in North Yorkshire, Darlington and east Cumbria to attract more visitors to the town.

Ms Gent said: “We are very lucky to have what we have for families at The Hub, The Bowes Museum and here at The Witham – there are some really amazing things for kids to do. It is not only one-off events, but also things that are happening regularly.”

One of the exciting activities at The Hub is the Yoga Bunnies workshop which caters for children aged five to seven and eight to 11 on August 16 which includes a yoga session, relaxation and crafts.

The Bowes Museum has a variety of craft activities on as well as a special Wild Birds Family Fun Day which includes the fantastic Walworth Birds of Prey as well as Jays Animal Encounters.

Children and their minders will be invited to create bird-related crafts on the day.

For its part The Witham is hosting a Summer of Stories.

Ms Gent said: “The storytelling chair is going on a tour every Tuesday and Friday. It will be going throughout the town so it will be a bit like storytelling busking.”

Another fun activity at The Witham will draw on children’s architectural and engineering skills as they help construct a super-sized cardboard castle with dale artist Gemma McColl.

Some 24,000 copies of the programme have been printed and they can be found at various outlets throughout Teesdale as well as neighbouring districts.
