A NEW trophy cabinet looks to be the order of the day for Teesdale’s latest band of Olympians.
Teesdale Special Olympics squad played their part as the Northern region team took home no fewer than 31 medals from the National Championships in Sheffield last week.
Coach Christine Taylour said the games were an amazing experience.
She added: “The swimmers were excellent and really gave it their all – they were absolutely brilliant.
“We had to get up at 5am every morning to have breakfast and get ready to catch the bus so they were long days.”
The final medal tally was nine gold medals, eight silver and 14 bronze to the team after some excellent displays from the dale’s seven competitors at Ponds Forge International Swimming Centre.
Among the medallists were Jonathan Taylour, Kit Heywood, Adam Rowntree and Declan Haughney, along with excellent performances from Victoria Bowman and Steven Hardy.
Barnard Castle’s Harvey Stonebank, 12, was on top form taking two golds and a silver.
“He is going to be one to watch,” added Ms Taylour.
There is plenty of the horizon for the squad with the regional swimming gala in Blackpool on September 23.
