ON buying a new trap gun in 2014, Teesdale marksman Adam Holmes set his sights on making the England team within three years.
Last week he accomplished his target after being confirmed as part of the junior England team that will compete in the home international competition at Ashbourne, in Ireland, on September 1.
The 21-year-old is one of only three marksmen selected for the country's junior auto ball trap (ABT) clay pigeon shooting team.
He made the grade after coming second in the English Open Championship and being ranked number one overall in England in the under 21 category.
On receiving news of making the team, Mr Holmes said: “I was over the moon. I was struggling to concentrate at work, put it that way.”
He added that after buying a new gun in 2014, he set himself three goals.
In the first year, he wanted to find his feet and improve his aim.
In the second, he wanted to make the North of England team, and in the third, to make the England team.
He achieved each on schedule.
The marksman, from Eggleston, started shooting at the age of 13, after going to the range with his grandfather, Ted MacFarlane.
He said: “It is just something I fell in love with when I first did it.
“I would recommend it to anyone, people should come out and try it.”
In the nine years that he has been shooting, his aim has improved dramatically to the point where he came third in the world championship recently.
Now his aim is firmly on making Team GB’s Olympic team.
He said: “It is a long way down the line, but I’ll certainly try my best.”
