Packed new season programme offers something for everyone at The Witham

MORE than 90 performances, exhibitions and activities have been unveiled by officials at The Witham, Barnard Castle, from September to December.

Helping launch the autumn and winter programme is celebrated poet and wordsmith Ian McMillan, who was so impressed with the venue when he appeared at The Witham for a second time in March, he agreed to write the introduction.

He described the venue as “a perfect example of what an arts centre in a small town can be and what it can strive to become. Long may The Witham continue to thrive: visit it regularly, cherish it, challenge it, enjoy it. And then have some more lovely cake.”

The Witham’s contemporary music gigs this autumn offer folk, including Three Cane Whale, on September 9, and Blazin’ Fiddles on November 25. There is also jazz and acoustic guitar.

Three evenings of classical music include the Royal Northern Sinfonia String Octet.

Live screenings will feature the The Magic Flute, La Bohème and Carmen on the Lake. The Spoken Word programme continues to expand with a screening live from London’s Royal Festival with John Le Carre – An Evening with George Smiley and evening presentations from both retired vet Neville Turner and artist illustrator Linda Birch, both of which are fundraisers for The Witham.

There is a wealth of theatre this season. In addition to touring performances, the Castle Players bring two shows this season – Peter Shaffer’s ingenious Black Comedy and the festive classic A Christmas Carol .

Family highlights include Theatre Hullabaloo’ TakeOff Festival, while illustrator Korky Paul is bringing Winnie the Witch to The Witham on November 14.

The Funny Way To Be Comedy Club continues to deliver the laughs. Highlights include a return visit for Omid Djalili in November.

The programme of art exhibitions continues and The Witham is offering an increased number of all day arts workshops. There is also a new monthly creative evening workshop Make It Thursdays with artist Gemma McColl every second Thursday of the month from September 14.

Film Thursdays continue and there is a Handcrafted Wedding Market plus the Designer Makers Market and Vintage Essence.

There are two Christmas Do events with live comedy, food and live music and for the second year running, The Witham is holding a New Year’s Eve bash, with ceilidh, hog roast and a live band.

Sarah Gent, arts marketing manager, said: “We have created a season that truly holds something for everyone.

“Come to one of more than 90 events at The Witham and not only support Barnard Castle’s arts centre but also have a brilliant time while you’re here.”

The new season’s brochure is out now with full details of dates, times and ticket prices.
