Jewellers add sparkle to Pride of Teesdale community awards

A BARNARD Castle jewellery shop has thrown its weight behind an awards scheme that aims to give credit to the unsung heroes of Teesdale.

Market Cross Jewellers has signed up to the Teesdale Mercury's Pride of Teesdale Community Awards by sponsoring the School of the Year category.

The jewellers has supported many local schools, nursing homes and charities in the past and realises the huge importance of staff who are keen to improve themselves and each other and having the ethos “going the extra mile”.

Store manager Amanda Hardy said: “Parents who volunteer at school offer resources and a support base for the school community while showing their children the importance of participating in the larger community.

“Rural schools can be the hub of a small community and connect children to supportive adults allowing all them to participate in extra-curricular activities. Our schools are an integral part of the foundation of a vital and healthy community, and the staff at Market Cross Jewellers wish all nominees the best of luck and we look forward to presenting the School of the Year award in November.”

The staff at Barnard Castle Jewellers, which also includes Julie Foster and Amanda Nellis, are currently fundraising and will be gathering cash for the Great North Air Ambulance Service on Sunday, August 20, for a charity walk with doggie friends that meets outside the shop at 10.30am.

It will be a gentle walk with views of the castle and river.

The shop will also be involved with the biggest coffee morning event on Friday, September 29, for Macmillan Cancer Support.

All activities and events can be found on the Market Cross Jewellers Facebook page, or at marketcrossjewellers.com.

Other categories that will feature in this year’s Pride of Teesdale awards include Charity Fundraiser of the Year, Public Service Award, Contribution to Sport Award, Award for Young Achievement, Good Neighbour Award, Volunteer of the Year and Community Project of the Year. Two photography awards are to be made for photographers over and under the age of 18.
