FOUR-YEAR-OLDS Philip Robinson and Molly Thornton said “I do” at a mock wedding ceremony last week.
But the vicar, Revd Allison Wallbank, made sure she changed the words of the ceremony so they weren’t married for real at St Mary’s church, in Middleton-in-Teesdale. It all came about because Middleton-in-Teesdale School wanted to start a project led by the children.
Teacher Lauren Egglestone said: “They have been playing weddings in the playground so we wanted to work with that.”
All things to do with wedding ceremonies were linked into reception class lessons, including creating invitations and making a wedding cake.
Ms Egglestone said: “It’s the first time we have done this – it’s a great way to engage the parents too.”
The ceremony, which was watched by proud mums and dads, was led by Ms Wallbank.
She joked: “I had to ring somebody and said ‘I’m not going to actually marry them am I?’ I made sure I changed the words.”
There were several ‘bridesmaids’ and two ‘best men’.
The wedding dress was supplied by Middleton-in-Teesdale resident Jane Addison. “I have two Victorian dresses that were perfect,” she said.
The children had their first dance at the nursery before they cut the cake and enjoyed a glass of pop.
