A £180,000 grant has helped refurbish almshouses in Barnard Castle with energy efficiency measures designed to reduce the residents’ bills by as much as 80 per cent.
The Dawson Cottages’ Charity was founded by John Ingram Dawson in 1951. It built a number of homes in the 1950s in Brough and Barnard Castle to provide comfortable accommodation for older women and is still providing that service.
The six cottages, off Newgate, have all been given an upgrade following a £180,000 grant from Homes & Communities Agency to the managing agents George F White.
It came after a report warned about possible subsidence and drainage problems.
The homes have been redesigned to provide “comfort and economy” to the residents who have welcomed the revamp. John Potter Architect Limited was responsible for the project.
Work was completed in two stages with residents transferring from their original homes to the newly refurbished properties.
The project included putting in thermal insulation to all external walls, new electric heating, new loft insulation, double glazing, replacement doors; wetrooms, better kitchens and the replacement of all floor coverings and decoration.
Paths have been relaid and new ramps installed to allow residents to move freely between the gardens of the properties.
Carolyn Milburn, from George F White, said: “Securing the Homes & Communities Agency’s Grant has enabled us to deliver these wonderfully energy efficient homes for the benefit of residents and to build upon the hard work of the trustees over the last 60 years”.
Simon Potter, from John Potter Architect Limited, added: “The project at Barnard Castle is a wonderful example of the combination of traditional spacious design and modern energy saving technology which allows us, as architects, to deliver energy efficient and comfortable homes. These projects are extremely rewarding for architects.
The trustees are seeking residents for three of the homes and applicants should contact Carolyn Milburn at George F White’s Wolsingham Office to discuss availability on 01388 529563.
