THE audience attending My Big Fat Cowpat Wedding, in Hamsterley, will step through the doors of the village hall to find the venue specially laid out and decorated for the wedding reception of Clare – a country girl – and Arjun, a lad from the city.
This is the celebration of a mixed marriage.
What could possibly go wrong? Well, plenty does in Sayan Kent’s fast moving, comedy-drama in a light-hearted exploration of relationships across the divides of rural/ urban, race and gender.
As the party gets going, things start to unravel in an evening full of prejudices, mishaps and misunderstandings with plenty of neat twists and a Bhangra dance for everyone to join in at the end.
A cast of four actors play all of the show’s 16 characters including the bride and groom, family and guests. Everyone will recognize someone – from the doting mother and drunken best man to the frightening mother-in-law.
Award-winning, London-based Kali Theatre is the UK’s only theatre company dedicated to championing women writers from a South Asian background. For more than 20 years they have been inspiring and challenging audience perceptions through original and thought-provoking theatre that reflects and comments on modern day lives.
Hamsterley promoter Jaquie Holloway said: “This is a gem of a production, very different, and we’re really looking forward to having some fun. Dress is smart casual, hats welcome, Wellington boots optional. And please bring your own wedding picnic.”
