CHRISTMAS lights taking up space in storage will be sold for scrap if a new home cannot be found for them.
The 45 motifs are now “surplus to requirements” in Barnard Castle following their last use in 2015.
Members of the town council resources committee agreed the lights should be advertised to other groups and councils around the dale to see if they were wanted.
If no buyer was found, their scrap value would be sought.
Cllr Tony Cooke said: “Those light frames are quite heavy and the price of scrap metal is reasonably high at the moment.
“Money spent here is spent on behalf of the community – we should get as much of that back as possible.”
Questions were also posed about the fate of some of the other lights and equipment in storage.
Cllr Cooke added: “The three sets of coloured lights that flash – I would like to see if the Christmas Lights Committee could use them and I would prefer it if they weren’t disposed of.
“It would be a shame to just dump them.”
It was agreed boxes holding the lights would be kept and a “Commando box” for controlling lights would continue to be used for icicle lighting around the town.
