Volunteers in Barnard Castle are hoping to be able to offer companionship to lone hospital patients.
Talks are underway about the Friends of Richardson Hospital introducing a befriending service for patients who do not get any visitors during their stay at the Richardson Hospital.
Starling ward manager Jean Heslop attended the Friends’ last committee meeting where she welcomed the idea.
Ms Helsop said: “It all stemmed from when we had a patient who had no visitors at all.
“I know it is a big ask.”
Members of the Friends’ committee agreed to look into ways of making this work.
It was suggested that each member could give the hospital their own personal contact number so they would be able to receive a call if they were needed.
However, members would have to undergo a DBS check and welfare training. The Friends’ agreed to look into this further.
