A STAINDROP Scout has become the first in her troop to earn a Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award.
Freya Baillie now aims to enrol for the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award on her 16th birthday. The 15-year-old has been a member of the Scout Association for ten years and joined Staindrop Scouts in 2016.
Explorer Scout leader Andy Carr said: “Freya is the first person to gain her Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award in Staindrop Explorer Scout Unit and the first person in Teesdale District Scouts to complete the award solely with the Scout movement. She is the first of many with another three Silver Awards due by the end of September this year.”
As part of her journey to the award, the young Scout volunteered to help the local cub pack by attending meetings and camps over six months.
She is also a young leader after qualifying for her young leader belt.
To meet the requirements, she took part in trampoline sessions at Teesdale Leisure Centre for six months and took up the keyboard, earning grade four within three months. Mr Carr said: “For Silver each person needs to complete a practice and assessed expedition. Freya completed her practice expedition in upper Teesdale and her assessed expedition was 60km along Hadrian’s Wall. The Silver expedition lasts for three days and two nights and this must remain fully self sufficient.”
