BUTTERKNOWLE’S Sea Scout Group has enjoyed an action-packed summer.
Activities began with an “I’m a Scout, Get Me Out Of Here” camp during which the youngsters trekked to the site, pitched their tents and cooked their own meals on the campfire.
They learned survival skills, survived the bug eating challenge and even tried some “sailing” on the river Gaunless. The Scouts continued the survival theme through the summer and incorporated a range of team building challenges including taking to the water with Teesdale Sailing Club.
The Cubs followed an international theme – visiting an alpaca farm in Lynesack.
The Cubs also joined 600 others from across County Durham at the Big Day Out, joining in with more than 50 different activities, the most popular being the racing car simulator and the Segways.
The following weekend the Cubs headed off with the Barnard Castle troop on their annual camp where they enjoyed an informative talk on Dorothy’s Well, a Durham-based charity which builds clean water wells in Tanzania.
Some of the younger Cubs got their first taste of sailing on a visit to Teesdale Sailing Club, while the Beavers joined the Cubs for a night of den building.
Throughout the term, the Beavers enjoyed a wide variety of activities learnt about personal safety and “Safe Strangers” ready for the holidays.
During the school holidays the Scouts took part in a series of shelter building days and then spent a night sleeping in their shelter village.
Leader Jenny Hodgson said: “It was surprisingly warm sleeping in the shelters even on what turned out to be quite a cold night.”
The Scouts also built an oven heated by an open fire and cooked pizzas and bramble crumble, which proved very popular.
In the coming weeks, Cubs and Scouts receive training on how to use a defibrillator – which they might just need if they attend the planned Fright Night. Butterknowle Beavers, Cubs and Sea Scouts meet on Friday nights during term time at Butterknowle School; Beavers 6-7pm, Cubs 7-8pm and Sea Scouts 8-9.30pm.
