A COLLECTION of photographs, some dating to the late 1800s, is to go on display to celebrate the centenary of an annual tup sale.
The first annual tup sale in Middleton-in-Teesdale took place in 1917 and to commemorate the 100th sale on October 20, Upper Teesdale Agricultural Support Services (Utass) has teamed up with the Swaledale Sheep Breeders Association (SSBA) to put on a photographic exhibition depicting farming activities in the area.
The collection has been amassed by the association secretary John Stephenson, who began gathering old photographs with the SSBA’s own centenary in 2020 in mind.
He said: “It is part of the reason for these photographs. I've asked if anyone had any old photographs.
“I am scanning them and keeping them on a memory stick.
“We have a lot of old photographs from the late Arthur Roberts, from Lunedale, which were given to the association.
“There are no dates on a lot of them but we have photographs going back to the late 1800s and early 1900s.”
The annual Swaledale tup sale at Middleton-in-Teesdale Auction Mart is one of a series of five connected to the association with the others being held at Hawes, Kirkby Stephen, St John’s Chapel and Ruswarp, near Whitby.
Mr Stephenson frequently takes a collection of relevant photos to different sales where they frequently stir up conversation.
Photographs selected for the centenary exhibition will focus primarily on Middleton-in-Teesdale.
The free exhibition opens on Tuesday, September 12, at the Utass offices, in Chapel Row, and moves to the auction mart’s cafe for the sale on Wednesday, October 11.
Thereafter it returns to Utass until Friday, October 20.
