Santas set to line up for Teesdale AC's festive fun runs

A SLED load of Santas will come under starter’s orders to raise money for good causes.
Teesdale Athletics Club is organising the third Barnard Castle Santa and Elf run in the grounds of The Bowes Museum and Barnard Castle School.
Officials are hoping the weather will be kinder this time round – last year’s event was almost cancelled due to a heavy snowfall.
Teesdale AC’s Donna Hawcroft said: “A dusting of snow would be nice to add to the atmosphere – but that’s all.”
This year’s runs take place on Sunday, December 18, and coincide with the second day of The Bowes Museum’s Christmas market.
Ms Hawcroft said it had been decided to move the date back to run alongside the market to add to the occasion.
“We thought it was quite nice the year before last when it was on the same day and it offers the spectators something extra to watching the runs.”
Entries for the runs have been coming in, but there is plenty of room for anyone wanting to take part.
“It’s not a race – you can’t run properly in a Santa suit anyway – and it’s about having a bit of fun,” added Ms Hawcroft. “For the spectators, it’s a great sight to see all those Santas.”
The Elf run, which is for the U10s, covers a 1km course, sets off at 10.30am.
Entry costs £5 and includes an elf hat.
The main event gets under way at 11am. Entry for those aged under 14 is £8 and includes the cost of a Santa hat.
Race fees for older teenagers and adults is £14, which includes a Santa suit.
Santa suits, hats and elf hats are subject to availability and anyone wishing to take part is advised to register in advance online at www.teesdaleac. com
The event is being staged in partnership with Teesdale Lions Club, with all profits going to the group.
