THE joy of reading brought young and old together at The Witham, in Barnard Castle.
Artist Gemma McColl was asked to organise a project to span the ages. Linking up with The Witham’s Summer of Stories festival, she opted to get schoolchildren and care home residents talking about their favourite
books. Residents of Manor House, in Barnard Castle, joined with pupils from Montalbo primary school.
Children spoke about books they enjoy reading, while the residents revealed their childhood books. Ms McColl said: “The idea is to explore stories we have in common. But it’s just a start – they’ve been drawing portraits of their friends or the residents of Manor House. I hope reading these stories again will bring back fond memories of their childhood and help them to reminisce about their experiences growing up and reflect on the differences and similarities between the participants.”
The pictures were illustrated with images linked to the books they discussed earlier. Sarah Gent, marketing manager of The Witham, said the finished art will form part of an exhibition for The Summer of Stories programme.
The activities were held thanks to funding from the Sir James Knott Trust.
