Cricket club morphs into "Glastonbarney" for Big Day Out

MORE than a thousand people flocked to Barnard Castle Cricket Club’s Big Day Out last Saturday. Or as one of the six bands playing, put it: “Welcome to Glastonbarney.”
For the seventh year in succession the ground was again turned into an outdoor concert area for eight hours.
Spectators had to brave the cold for most of that time as the promised sunshine disappeared in mid-afternoon.
The compensation was an array of pop and rock music, culminating with the The Long Tall Beatles, who ran through distinctive cover versions of the greatest single hits by the biggest of all pop groups.
The event ran smoothly, manned by a small army of volunteers from the club, whose efforts were orchestrated with military precision by joint organisers in chief, David Robinson and Jimmy Raine.
Club president Stephen Brenkley said: “Our thanks go to all those who supported Bands Day. That is all those who came to an event which we hope has become a part of life in the Barney community.
“But we also appreciate the patience and understanding of people living near the ground. Without that we simply couldn’t do it. And thanks, I guess, should go the weather which relented just in time for us to decide to go ahead.”
