Teenage friends raise funds for once-in-a-lifetime African adventure

AN upper dale trio has embarked on a fundraising mission ahead of a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Africa.
College friends Emma Hutchinson, Hazel Beadle and Imogen Bristow have put themselves forward to take part in an expedition to Malawi later this year.
The trip, which is being organised through World Challenge, will see 16 students from Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College, in Darlington, head to the continent in October to help communities build schools.
Ms Hutchinson, 16, who lives in Eggleston. said: “It will be an exciting experience. As you get older the chances of going somewhere like this are slimmer.”
Ms Beadle, 17, also from Eggleston, added: “We will be travelling around and working with locals as well as going into schools.”
The girls will be visiting Thantwe School which receives no government funding and relies on the support of their community. The school’s 630 pupils are taught in just six classrooms with few resources.
The three students have set a fundraising target of £2,500 each which will be used to cover their travel expenses as well as living costs while there. The money will also be used to buy resources such as building materials to allow them to complete projects and make a difference.
A coffee morning is being held at Jacob’s Lodge, at Hill Top, in Eggleston next Monday, April 17. As well as hot drinks and cakes being served from 11am until 3pm, there will be games and a raffle.
An evening of entertainment has also been scheduled to help raise money for the trip. Mickleton Village Hall will be hosting ‘A Bit Of A Do’ on Saturday, April 22, from 7pm until 1am.
Tickets cost £20 which include canapés, a hog roast and a dessert as well as live music from Renegade Jukebox and a disco. The event is for over-16s only.
Ms Hutchinson said: “Everyone is welcome to come along and help us raise as much money as we can.
“We’ve never done anything like this before.
“We are really excited about going out there and making a difference.”
