Family edge closer to £10,000 raised after children's horror cash

A DALE mother who has raised thousands for charity after her children were left fighting for their lives following a head-on car crash is preparing to hold another fundraiser.
Julie Elstob’s children, Jack and Sophie Handyside, who now attend Staindrop Academy, suffered life-changing injuries when an elderly motorist smashed into their car on the A688 near Staindrop on September 29, 2012.
Jack, who is now 15, was left with a significant brain injury and Sophie, who is now 13, suffered a fractured skull.
Their dad, Darren, suffered severe leg injuries and broken ribs. Following the accident, Ms Elstob has organised annual fundraising events for the Great North Air Ambulance Service which sent two of its aircraft to the incident.
The family are hoping that this year’s event will help add to the £8,000 they have already donated to the charity since the crash.
Ms Elstob said: “This is the only way I can show my gratitude. Jack and Sophie are living proof of the amazing work it does. If it wasn’t for them they wouldn’t be here.
“The only thing I can do to show my gratitude is to raise money for the charity, although we will never be able to thank the air ambulance enough for what they did.”
In the past the fundraising events have been held at Butterknowle village hall but following the family’s move to Barnard Castle, this year’s event will take place at Glaxo Sports and Social Club on Saturday, April 29, at 7.30pm.
Tickets cost £10 and include a pie and peas supper. There will be live music from Borderland who will be playing soft rock, pop and party anthems.
Donations are also being sought for raffle prizes.
Ms Elstob said: “It’s amazing how far Jack and Sophie have come on.”
Head of fundraising at GNAAS Mandy Drake said: “The family get behind us each year and we appreciate every penny raised. We hope the night is a great success and everyone has a lot of fun.”
To buy tickets or make a donation contact Ms Elstob on 07707 793954. Tickets can also be bought from Glaxo and Social Club.
