NatWest, in Barnard Castle, to close

ANOTHER Barnard Castle bank is to close with the rise in online banking being blamed.

The Royal Bank of Scotland has announced that the town branch of NatWest will close its doors on May 31 next year.

The bank is one of 259 branches to be affected which will result in 680 job losses. This includes 62 RBS branches and 197 NatWest outlets across the country.
An RBS spokesperson said: “More and more of our customers are choosing to do their everyday banking online or on mobile.

“Since 2014 the number of customers using our branches across the UK has fallen by 40 per cent and mobile transactions have increased by 73 per cent over the same period. Over 5 million customers now use our mobile banking app and one in five only bank with us digitally.”

HSBC closed its branch in Barnard Castle this year, leaving customers angry. MP Helen Goodman was among those who protested, saying many people in Teesdale do not use online banking or simply do not have adequate broadband.
