Headteacher Helen is delighted to switch on Evenwood's lights

VILLAGERS gathered in Evenwood to mark the start of the festive season.

The Christmas lights were switched on at the Randolph Community Centre by Evenwood Primary School headteacher Helen Sutherland. Ms Sutherland is leaving her post at the school at the end of this month after six years. She was asked by Evenwood and Barony Parish council, who have funded the lights, if she would do the honours this year.

She said: “I was very touched to be asked to turn on the lights. I’m feeling very emotional about leaving. Evenwood has been such a supportive community. I am going to miss everyone a lot.”

Residents also tucked into warm mince pies and a hot drinks during the switch on.

Parish council chairwoman Cllr Barbara Nicholson said: “This is the second year running we’ve had the lights back in the village. Next year we are hoping to have more. There used to be trees lit up all the way through the village. We are going to do the tree at bank top and the one at the club.”
