MORE people have died on roads in Teesdale than in any other area in County Durham, a report has shown.
Durham Police, Crime and Commissioner, Ron Hogg's quarterly report into police performance shows that along with having the most fatalities, Teesdale also has the second most fatal and serious accidents in the area, along side Crook and Consett and Peterlee. Only Darlington had more serious crashes.
In the 12 months up to September 2016, there were 11 fatal crashes in the county with three of those taking place in the dale. Darlington and Consett each had two fatal smashes. A further six collisions in the dale resulted in serious injury.
Mr Hogg said while the total number of collisions in force area had declined during the past three years, the high number of fatal crashes had spurred people’s concerns about road safety.
He said: “There have been a number of publicised fatal road traffic collisions, which have likely contributed towards the increase in concerns about dangerous driving. I am hopeful that the number of initiatives the constabulary have planned reduce collisions will improve negative perceptions.”
