PLANS have been drawn up to ban parking at a busy village junction.
Double yellow lines have been earmarked for Town Head, Middleton-in-Teesdale, where it meets the main B6277 through the village.
Cllr Ted Henderson, who represents the village at Durham County Council, said the measure was being put forward in response to complaints about parking along a stretch of Town Head from opposite St Mary’s Church to the junction.
He told Middleton-in-Teesdale Parish Council: “I was standing there having a look. There was a truck coming one way and a car the other and it was chaos.
“Putting some yellow lines down will alleviate it.”
Cllr Henderson said cars parked half on the pavement were also blocking access to a set of steps opposite the church.
“The county council has agreed to put yellow lines to prevent people parking on that side of the road to help the situation,” he added.
Cllr Henderson said action was also being planned to stop cars parking on the pavement outside the Methodist Chapel, in the village centre, again in response to complaints.
He said this had been a trickier situation because the pavement was the responsibility of Durham County Council, while the section of road belonged to Raby Estates.
But he said: “We can do something – we are going to put three bollards in to prevent cars parking on the pavement.
“You have got to think about road safety. The pavement is not for parking on.
“The bollards will match the rest that are in the village.”
Cllr Adam Hearn queried whether there would be public consultation. Cllr Henderson said there would.
