Plans to resurrect Sunday football team in Staindrop

A TEESDALE joiner is seeking to buck the trend by reforming a village football club.
John Charles wants to get a club back up and running in Staindrop – four years after the Wheatsheaf XI called it a day.
A number of Teesdale clubs have folded in recent years, including Butterknowle and Cockfield, but with posts still erect on Winston Road and a number of players interested, Mr Charles is confident there’s room for another outfit.
“One of my mates played for Bishop Auckland Cockton Hill and they have just stopped – he said he fancied setting it up,” said Mr Charles.
“It’s been four years since they’ve had one. The pitch is nearly sorted – it just needs cutting and tidying up.”
The 34-year-old said he’s gathered interest from about 12 to 15 people and is trying to raise £2,000 to get the club back up and running.
He added: “I am going to arrange to meet them all and see what the craic is.
“We’ve got a few contacts and we’re hoping to get in the Wear Valley Sunday League next year.
“I used to play a little bit when I lived in Middlesbrough – I haven’t played for years and it used to be a bit of five-a-side not 11-a-side.
“But it keeps you fit.”
Staindrop FC were a force in the Sunday league winning the first division in 1987-88, finishing second in 1994-95 and winning the first division knockout cup in 1995-96.
In a nod to their village predecessor, Mr Charles hopes the team will use the Wheatsheaf as a base and is trying to gather sponsors for the new club.
He added: “Obviously we are going to need shirts, goal nets and corner flags – we’ve looked into a number of things.
“If people are willing to help out that would be great – and if businesses want to do shirt sponsors even better.”
Mr Charles added he was looking for clubs for friendlies as well as people with access to a mower or roller to help restore the former football field.
