More damage to Barnard Castle's Demesnes adds weight to argument for restricting cars

MINDLESS motorists have caused more damage to a Barnard Castle beauty spot.

Turf on the Lower Demesnes has been torn up by drivers performing “doughnuts” a day after heavy rain. It is the latest in a long line of incidents which have damaged the popular area and comes at a time when measures are being considered to keep motorists off the ground.

After the latest damage, one dog-walker said: “It’s simply disgraceful. The grass is getting weaker and weaker every time this happens and these drivers need to be stopped.”

Once again, the damage was caused on part of the Demesnes close to the children’s play area. Barnard Castle Town Council is due to take over management of the Demesnes from Durham County Council, and with the likelihood of funding being available, councillors are working to find a solution to the problem.

A public consultation has been held into proposals to fence off part of the Demesnes to restrict cars to certain areas. It would mean cars could still park next to the river but they would be prevented from roaming at will on the Demesnes.

One resident agreed with the fence proposal, adding: “If that’s what it takes to stop this happening, it’s worth a try.”

Another added: “They are just going to have to put up the fence and see if it works, but something needs to be done soon to stop this vandalism.”
